If you want playing slots to mean more than inserting a coin and pulling a lever then you should begin by understanding slots reels and paylines. Slots reels and paylines are concepts related essentially to the electromechanical slots machines and need to be understood in that context.
You need an understanding of the operation of the slots machine before understanding slots reels and paylines. The slots machine consists of a number of reels each of which contains a number of symbols or blanks. These spaces containing the symbols or blanks are called stops. When you pull the lever the reels begin rotating independently slowly coming to a rest. At that point three stops are aligned. If the stops contain a combination of symbols that is in the payout schedule then the slots player stands to win if he has bet on that combination.
